Planting Pictures IV

Tori is doing well, I think the original leaves (the oddly shaped ones that look like they are drying out) are kind of like "baby-leaves". These, if i remember my science class correctly, are the first two leaves that come out of a newly germinated seed and do not necessarily resemble the typical leaves found on that plant. The vine probably needs something on which to grow.

Steve is doing quite well, and Jeff believes that the best sun is to the north. For a plant he is kind of slow, although Steve maybe blocking some sun.

Jimmy has died. The cause is unknown. There are several possibilities. There is a basil mold going around, plus he was probably over-watered. Such is life.

This is the newcomer to the planted crowd. I think (pending D's approval) I will call it "Tori". She is a cucumber plant and was almost dried out by the time I planted her this morning.

Steve and Jeff are doing well, although Jeff's leaves are having trouble finding the sun.

Paco has sprouted. We all wish these few the best of luck.

Jimmy is, perhaps, doing the worst over all. He appears to be water logged but I added a small amount of fertilizer. I think the soil that he and most of the other plants are planted in is too clay-like in texture...

The plants are doing well, despite the rain every other day. From what I have read, tomatoes do well in a more arid climate, and making sure not to over water them is a big concern. Over watered tomatoes are tasteless and apparently contain far fewer nutrients then their counterparts raised in drier weather.

Planting

I always want to have a garden and the itch is there every spring. Usually though all of my purchased plants die slow horrible deaths through neglect. They wither and rot as I forget to take care of them.

To minimize the amount of care, I am going to try "hanging" tomato plants. Far away from the ground they will not have to deal with weeds and pests. Plus the bucket retains some water and lengthens the time between waterings.

I am also going to pot a few herbs. I mean they are basically weeds right? Impossible to kill...

I'll post pictures later, the roommate is streaming hockey to 10,000 others. Too bad NHL games don't get broadcast on TV.
